masaru is from a japan that very much mirrors ours. it is, essentially, our world, with the inclusion of wide-spread magic. in most cases it's subtle, a magician's sleight of hand being something more, or a person with prenatural sight. however, it also means this: all of the creatures from fairy tales and old stories are completely real.

that said, masaru has no idea how old he is. he is a very, very old ko-tengu, or crow tengu, a lower-ranked crow demon maintaining the bird-like features of old rather than the long red nose of higher-ranked demons. he does not know what year it was when he died or how old he was; his human form is in its late thirties and he maintains that as his only clue. he could age it at will but he keeps it as a reminder. all he does know about his past life is that he was a practicing buddhist, adhering to the tenants in everything but his pride. that, and how he died: violently, left for the crows to peck at.

sometimes he wonders if the crows eating him is part of why he became a crow demon, the trauma aiding to his transformation, but the truth is far simpler. though he can't remember it he was a merchant doing his best in a very tumultuous time. he remembered his religion well, treating people kindly and not cheating anyone. it wasn't an opulent life but it was a comfortable one, and he was well-liked. he was however very prideful, and that pride is what kept him from bowing to the demands of bandits wanting his stock and what money he had - and what ultimately caused his death at their hands.

awakening as a demon is strange. for a very long time all you know is that, forgetting every part of your past life. the tengu of his world are the benevolent protectors of the more modern sensibilities and less the violent trouble-makers of the past - however, though they were good buddhists they fell to pride, which means that if their pride is questioned they can become very vengeful. masaru has over the years remembered what little he knows, and it isn't much to go off of. his haunting grounds - literally - are a deeply forested small mountain in kyoto prefecture (think tennozan) that he protects fiercely. he's lived there for centuries and while not many monks came to stay on his mountain, they all treated the area with reverence and he protected them well as they searched for enlightenment.

he did fall desperately in love with one of them but despite haunting him while he was on the mountain, he never tried to court him - instead watched him, cared for him, and relished the attention he got for pestering him on treks and visits throughout the years. this continued until the day the monk died an old man in his forests. masaru knows he was righteous enough to go to heaven but mourned him nonetheless and the forest mourned with him. to this day he wonders if he could have had something if he'd only tried. he also selfishly wonders if maybe his lost love had been reborn instead.

that was centuries past still and now he has a tattoo of remembrance for him. as the years passed the pain lessened but it's never gone away completely; falling in love with a young monk was one of the first returns to real human emotions that masaru had after he woke up with feathers. he bides his time and continues to protect his mountain, wondering if he'll ever be done with his punishment. as the modern world crept in and more people and less monks came up, he became slightly bitter and petulant - he left his mountain more often, learning the ways of modern life and playing tricks on people that didn't treat his mountain properly - when a ski lodge was under construction it took much longer than it should have because of him, though it was small tricks and he never actually hurt anyone.

he's acclimated to the changes the world has gone through but it's rough going. things change so quickly and undying creatures so slowly.

POWERS
  • TRANSFORMATION he has three forms: a crow, a human, and a monstrous half-human half-bird creature with wings and a beak. he needs no special item or spell to transform; it is a matter of will. if he's too distracted it can potentially go wrong but the worst that could happen is being stuck as an angry bird for a while.
  • GUST using the fan crafted out of his feathers, he can create whirling gusts of wind. they have no special attributes but are strong enough to knock down a large person or send a smaller one flying.
  • FLYING bro he's a bird. he can totally fly. not in fully-human form, but definitely in the other two.
WEAKNESSES
  • SNAKES maybe less a weakness, more rage-inducing. fuck off, snakes. he'll fight you.
  • PRIDE he's working on it, but give a guy a minute. since it's the cause of his predicament in the first place it's a bit of a sore spot but he is genuinely trying to change, though he gets stuck in the trappings of his own pride even now.
  • CATS logically he knows he's bigger than a cat but at the same time, the bird-brain freaks the fuck out over cats. in human form he'll be kind of okay but it's a struggle. just let him live, y'all.
MISC
  • his human form is covered in tattoos, old and newer. why? many of them are religious, hearkening back to his years practicing buddhism or reminders of monks that have spent time on his mountain or in his forests. others are reminders to himself. others are just because. some he got years ago when wounds were fresh and some he got more recently from tattoo artists that don't give a shit about checking ids, but magic maintains them when he's not in human form.
  • while he is not fond of snakes or cats he is fine with dogs, foxes, fish, and other birds.
  • because he hasn't always been a demon, it's easier for him to work through human emotions and blend in among "real people" while in human form. however, getting hip with the changing times was an adventure.
